  • Indestructible Paint joins the EcoSuite ATI Programme project to advance sustainable aerospace composites

    We’re proud to be part of a pioneering UK aerospace initiative bringing our IP1130 in-mould primer technology to a consortium developing the next generation of lightweight, sustainable aircraft interiors.

    The Project

    EcoSuite is supported by the ATI Programme — a joint Government and industry investment delivered through a partnership between the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI), the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). The project brings together a consortium of UK industry leaders and research institutions with a shared goal: to develop next-generation Business and First Class aircraft seats using sustainable materials and innovative processes. Partners include Safran , NCC, the University of Bristol, the University of Sheffield’s AMRC, and several specialist manufacturers. This marks the first direct ATI investment in an aircraft seating project in the UK, highlighting EcoSuite’s alignment with ATI’s Destination Zero strategy to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

    With a total value of £7.6 million and a three-year timeline (Q4 2024 to Q4 2027), EcoSuite aims to mature and validate a range of sustainable and lightweight materials and efficient processes, reducing weight, environmental impact, and production cost.

    Our role

    Indestructible Paint’s contribution centres on a new approach to composite surface preparation. Traditionally, composite parts require extensive hand filling and surface work after moulding to achieve the smooth, high-quality finish required for aerospace interiors. Our IP1130 in-mould primer system fundamentally changes that process.

    Rather than applying a primer after the composite part has been made, IP1130 is sprayed directly into the mould before the composite is laid up. When the mould is released, the primer has already formed an integral part of the component’s surface — mirroring the smoothness of the mould itself and dramatically reducing post-production finishing work.

    Later in the project, we will be supplying competitive topcoats to complete the system, offering a full, weight-optimised coating solution from primer to finish.

    The IP1130 system was originally developed in response to a challenge faced during production of a high-end carbon fibre sports car, where resin-weak areas and unsealed fibres on composite panels required over 24 man hours of hand filling per body. The in-mould approach eliminated that bottleneck and the same principle now applies directly to aerospace composite manufacturing.
