Brian Norton Honoured with BCF Silver Medal
We are delighted to share the news that Brian Norton, who served as Managing Director of Indestructible Paint for many years before retiring in February 2026, has been awarded the British Coatings Federation (BCF) Silver Medal in recognition of his outstanding and longstanding service to the coatings industry.
The award was presented at the BCF Annual Conference on 4th June 2026, where Brian received the medal from BCF CEO Tom Bowtell and BCF President Jane Ryder. It is the Federation’s highest honour, recognising those who have made an exceptional contribution to the paints, coatings, printing ink and wallcovering industries.
About the BCF Silver Medal The BCF Silver Medal was established by Leslie Silver OBE, founder of Silver Paint and Lacquer, upon his retirement in 1980. It recognises outstanding service and an exceptional contribution to the paints, coatings, printing ink and wallcovering industries’ growth and reputation.

A Legacy Rooted in the Industry
Brian’s connection with the coatings industry runs deep. Indestructible Paint was founded by his father, Doug Norton, in 1978, and from the outset the company was closely involved with the Paintmakers Association — one of the organisations that would eventually form today’s British Coatings Federation. Brian joined the business in 1990 and maintained that strong relationship as the company grew.
Over the decades, he contributed to a wide range of BCF groups and committees, most notably the Aerospace and Defence Committee Group — a sector in which Indestructible Paint remains a leading name. Brian also served as a non-executive director of the Federation in the early 2000s and was actively involved in forums covering health and safety, operations, transport and general industrial coatings.
Championing the Industry
Brian was a consistent advocate for both the coatings sector and the role of small and medium-sized businesses within it. His work in industry advocacy took him to Downing Street in 2013 and the Houses of Parliament in 2019, where he helped make the case to Government for the value that paint and coatings bring to the wider economy. He was also a strong supporter of skills and apprenticeships, encouraging use of BCF resources to develop the next generation of industry professionals.
Brian said of the award: “I was genuinely shocked and very honoured to receive the BCF Silver Medal. Indestructible Paints has had a long association with the Federation, going back to my father’s involvement when the company was founded, and it has been a pleasure to maintain that connection over so many years. The BCF has grown enormously in stature and capability and continues to do vital work promoting the value of paint and coatings, which are essential to almost every part of industry and business. I am grateful for the support, friendship and collaboration I have experienced through the Federation over the years.”
BCF CEO Tom Bowtell added: “Brian has given many years of dedicated service to both the Federation and the wider coatings industry. His longstanding involvement, practical support for BCF activities and commitment to championing the industry make him a very worthy recipient of the Silver Medal. On behalf of the BCF and the wider sector, I am delighted to congratulate Brian on this well-deserved recognition.”
Ed Johnson, Managing Director of Indestructible Paint, said: “Brian’s contribution to Indestructible Paint and to the broader coatings industry has been immense. His passion for the business and his commitment to the BCF have shaped the company’s reputation over many decades, and this award is a fitting recognition of everything he has given to the industry. On behalf of everyone at Indestructible Paint, I congratulate Brian and wish him a very well-deserved retirement.”
We congratulate Brian on this thoroughly deserved recognition. His dedication to Indestructible Paint, to the BCF, and to the coatings industry as a whole has left a lasting mark, and we wish him a long and happy retirement.
